Ah the FLUFFY WHITE STUFF...

falling as snow on the hills around Mt. Beauty transforming the area to picture postcard perfect during the winter months.
We have already had a taste of snow during May in the high country - as I am writing this Mt. Bogong has a dusting of snow cover, if you enjoy your winter alpine sports a time to dust off the equipment and think about making bookings so you can enjoy your alpine break and snow sports.
Mt. Beauty is any easy 50 minute drive from Falls Creek, those of you not keen on driving yourself and maybe having to fit chains to your vehicle can take the bus via Falls Creek Coach Services who provide a regular service during the ski season. www.fallscreekcoaches.com.au
Why not experience skiing two mountains in the one-day both Falls Creek and Hotham by taking the helicopter link across to Hotham www.fallscreek.com.au

FOR THE ROMANTIC’S – spend some quality time together!!

Winter a time for snuggling up next to a warm fire with your loved one, a glass of wine, a spa – we provide the ambience the rest of the magic is up to you.
A time of year for bowls of homemade soup (check Braeview’s Cuisine Page) and hot chocolate beside the fire. How does a “Weekend Indulgence” or “Relax Revive Package” sound?

If skiing doesn’t appeal to you there are still plenty of wineries, local produce to sample and great restaurants to try (renowned for their local produce), you could even try your hand at some horse riding www.bogonghorse.com.au.

A BIT OF HISTORIAL INFORMATION ON THE OLDEST CATTLEMENS HUT

Courtesy of www.fallscreek.com.au

Built over six weeks in 1889 by the Wallace brothers Arthur, William and Stewart, Wallace’s Hut is the oldest standing mountain hut in the Bogong High Plains Alpine National Park.

After the Wallace's lease of the high plains area had expired in the 1930s the State Electricity Commission (SEC) assumed ownership of the hut, using it for their survey team. Constructed from slabs of Snowgum, the hut’s original woollybutt roof shingles were then replaced with corrugated iron as were the chimney and walls.

"Wallaces Hut 2001"

When the SEC had no further use for Wallace’s Hut they decided to retrieve their corrugated iron thus exposing this historic hut to the weather. Rover Scouts banded together and raised the necessary finances to purchase the iron from the SEC ensuring the hut would retain its identity.

Wallace’s Hut stands as a slice of human history and acts as a refuge in the rugged high country. The hut has been classified by the National Trust in 1988.

To visit Wallace’s Hut

(visits only available to cross country skiers during the designated winter season Bogong High Plains road closed during winter)

Drive out the Bogong High Plains Road from Falls Creek towards Omeo. This road is now sealed to make the journey even more pleasurable. Follow the road for approximately 7.5 kms from the dam wall and park your car at the signed entrance. From there it is an easy graded 750m walk into the hut.

Watchbed Creek / Wallace’s Hut Trail (8km / 15km return)
The return trip to Watchbed Creek is one of the most popular trails.

It can be windy crossing the Dam Wall, but once around the corner the track is well sheltered, flat and wide all the way to Watchbed Creek. For an 8km return ski skiers can choose to turn around near the turn-off up the Paralyser on the Heathy Spur Loop.

Continuing straight on around past Langford Gap takes skiers out to Wallace’s Hut - the oldest standing mountain hut in the Bogong High Plains Alpine National Park.

15km is a fair trip, but when the tracks are groomed hard and fast it’s beautiful skating around the eastern end of Rocky Valley Lake.

BRING IT ON
"Bring it on!"

FOR THE BEGINNER CROSS COUNTRY SKIER

Beginner Terrain
The Falls Creek Nordic Bowl is sheltered from the weather and provides the perfect place to learn, play and have fun. A large open space, almost flat at the base with sloping sides of different degrees of difficulty, the Nordic Bowl is perfect for group activities, learning basic skills and games on snow. Once more confident, skiers can try out their new skills on the 1.5km Nordic Bowl loop or practice downhill skills on the Hoppet start area.
